Defense Technical Information Center Selects Quality Associates for Microfilm Conversion Project

Quality Associates, Inc., an established provider of services and solutions for document management, imaging and archiving, announced that it has been selected by the Defense Technical Information Center, the premier provider of scientific and technical information for the Department of Defense (DoD), to complete a comprehensive media conversion project. The terms of the contract were not disclosed.

DTIC has an immediate and ongoing requirement to digitize documents in their technical report collection that currently reside on microfilm. QAI is providing hardware and software products as well as technical expertise for the streamlined microfilm conversion process. Under the agreement, Quality Associates will convert technical reports from 35mm and 16mm microfilm into PDF, and then transfer the files to DVD.

The Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) transfers technical information among DoD personnel, DoD contractors and potential contractors, and other U.S. government agencies. By converting the files into digital format, the documents will be accessible by DTIC’s users online. As the documents are scanned, Quality Associates will also digitally enhance the images to restore the quality of any that have deteriorated.

Scott Swidersky, director, Information Systems Division, Quality Associates, said, "As a valuable source of information for the United States Department of Defense, it is vital that the Defense Technical Information Center is able to store mass quantities of documents over long periods of time. By bringing in Quality Associates to convert these documents from microfilm to DVD, the DTIC will ensure that its files are available in the years to come."
